Team East elected to bat after winning the toss. Good bowling and a couple of classic catches slowed their early charge. They were not to be denied, however, and at the end of twenty overs the Easterners had posted a formidable total. Needing 195 to win, Wests got away to a healthy start with a flurry of sixes. Cagey bowling soon halted the momentum and the Westerners ran out of wickets with 134 on the board. All in all, a high standard cricketing duel.
Congratulations go to Luke Statton and the East team for their big win in the first Memorial Warrior Cup. Of course, Harry Moffitt’s Westerners are already planning their revenge for next year.
A big shout out goes to all our volunteers who helped make the day: to Dan Parker, Dan Blackman, Mike Whitelaw, Tracy Parker and Quentin Masson. To Luke and Harry for assembling the respective sides and to Bilko for bringing along his umpiring skills. To Paul Dunbavin for arranging the stores and equipment.
Our thanks go to all the sponsors who made this event happen. Particularly the Toll Group as our major sponsor, and to the Platypus Outdoors Group for the donation of caps and a great looking trophy. To AVOB for continued support. To the North Bondi RSL for the best player award. Without you all, this event would not have succeeded. TACMED for your unwaivering and continuing support. Misfit Branding for event branding, graphic design and signage.
The inaugural Memorial Warrior Cup cricket match proved that we have a winning formula: great cricket between two competitive sides, enthusiastic supporters and generous sponsors. That’s something we can build on for next year and beyond.
