2024 Memorial Warrior Cup

The spirit of cricket was in full swing at this year’s Memorial Warrior Cup, where Team East and West locked horns in a contest that wasn’t just about runs and wickets, but about honouring the memory of our veterans. Humidity hung in the air like a wet blanket, but not even the weather could dampen the action at the famed Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

As the day unfolded, it was evident that the coin toss wasn’t just a formality. With their eyes on victory, Team West’s resounding decision to bat first was like a gauntlet thrown down. And boy, did they make the most of it. An awe-inspiring, unbeaten 209 runs on the board, Team East were left with a mountain to climb under the hot Brisbane sun.

Despite valiant efforts, East’s push for victory wasn’t enough to upset West’s seemingly insurmountable total. The final scorecard read 163 runs, a testament to the power of perseverance and good cricket on display. It’s worth noting that ‘Pitty,’ emblematic of the best of the game’s traditions, walked away with the Spirit of Cricket award. The Player of the Match went to none other than ‘Cormy,’ with an incredible solo run of 130 that electrified the field.

The presentations were a heartfelt reminder of why we all gathered at the arena. Doug Sheridan’s acceptance of the Memorial Warrior Cup trophy laurels two years of dedication and skill. Spirits high and thirsty for more cricket, kids enjoyed the jumping castles as adults relished in the much-needed shade with faces adorned by paintings of warriors past.

As the event wrapped up, the team behind the scenes—the tireless volunteers and the unwavering sponsors—were recognized for helping the day’s events run as smoothly as the drives ‘Cormy’ sent thudding against the boundary ropes.

From the crack of the bat to the fizz of a cool drink, the day was a celebration of sport, service, and community. It’s a reminder that our warriors endure not only in memory but in the camaraderie and competition that brings us all together for the Memorial Warrior Cup.

Until we meet again next year, may the sound of leather on willow echo the courage and honour of our warrior counterparts. And to all who participated, supported, and sponsored the event this year, your contribution is the heartbeat of this tradition.
